Known as Bontrokkie explores character through observation. The African Stonechat is depicted perched in quiet attentiveness, body composed and alert. Often seen resting on elevated stems, shrubs, and fence posts, the bird becomes a study of awareness, confidence, and the subtle presence of a species that seems to favour a view above its surroundings. The title draws inspiration from the bird’s Afrikaans name, Bontrokkie, meaning “little patterned dress” — a reference to the striking contrast and colouration of its plumage.

Rendered with careful attention to form and feather detail, the artwork focuses on the character of the bird rather than its environment. The absence of a defined background allows the figure to exist in isolation, drawing attention toward the striking contrast of its plumage, the warm tones of its breast, and the poised posture that reflects its watchful nature.
