Protected by Design explores resilience through form. The pangolin is depicted in its characteristic defensive posture, curled into a protective sphere of overlapping scales. Known as the world’s only scaled mammal, the animal becomes a study of adaptation, vulnerability, and the remarkable ways in which nature creates solutions for survival.

Rendered entirely through layered pencil mark-making, the drawing focuses on pattern, texture, and structure. Each individual scale is carefully constructed through repeated lines and tonal variation, creating a rhythm that moves across the surface of the artwork. The absence of a defined background allows the figure to exist in isolation, drawing attention toward the intricate arrangement of scales and the subtle glimpse of the animal beneath its natural armour.

While the protective posture suggests defence, the artwork also reveals a quieter story.
