“Yellow Pincushion” Print

The Yellow Pincushion (Leucospermum citrignum) is a flower that holds an undeniable presence with its intricate, spiky blooms and radiant golden hues.

This watercolour piece marks a departure from my usual black-and-white works, offering a joyful exploration of colour that brings the Yellow Pincushion to life. The rich yellows and soft oranges evoke warmth, energy, and optimism—qualities that are reflected in the flower itself. The way it grows, almost as if it’s reaching for the sun, speaks to the vitality of nature, and I sought to capture that spirit in every brushstroke.

Native to the fynbos region of South Africa, the Yellow Pincushion is a flower that thrives in the most challenging of environments, blooming in rocky, nutrient-poor soils. One fascinating fact about this remarkable plant is that its unique shape and vibrant colour are specifically designed to attract pollinators like birds, especially the sunbird. These birds are drawn to the striking colour and rich nectar, playing a crucial role in the flower’s life cycle. In many ways, the Yellow Pincushion is a symbol of nature’s ingenious adaptations and its delicate balance with the creatures it sustains.

As I painted this piece, I was inspired by the way the Yellow Pincushion seems to capture the light—bright, energetic, and full of life. It’s a reminder that beauty is not just seen, but felt, and it is often in the most unexpected places. Whether you’re drawn to its bold colours or its architectural form, this botanical print brings a sense of joy and elegance to any space.
